Welcome to the New Pilates West Island Website

Our redesigned website brings a cleaner booking experience, a personal account area, and a digital space that reflects what the studio actually feels like.

We have been building something, and it is ready. On September 1st, 2026, the new

goes live, and if you have visited our site before, you will notice the difference immediately. The look is different. The booking system is different. The way you find classes, learn about the studio, and manage your account is different. All of it is intentional.

          A new booking experience

The studio has always been a considered space. Small classes, thoughtful instruction, a room that feels right. Our website, for a long time, did not match that. It was functional enough, but it did not tell you who we are, and it did not make booking or managing your classes particularly easy. So we rebuilt it from the ground up.

Whether you are returning to the reformer after a summer away, joining us for the first time this fall, or just curious about what we do, here is what you will find when you visit.

We have moved to a new online booking platform, and the change is significant. You now have a personal

where you can view your upcoming classes, manage your credits, update your profile, and purchase class packages, all in one place. No more back-and-forth emails to reschedule. No more wondering how many classes you have left.

The class schedule is interactive: you can filter by class type, view the week ahead, and reserve your spot in a few clicks. If you have booked with us before, you will need to create a new account on the new platform. It takes about two minutes, and our

Every class type now has its own page with a clear description of what to expect, who it suits, and what it costs. If you have been curious about the difference between a group reformer class and a private session, or if you have wondered what Body Alignment Therapy involves, those answers are now easy to find.

Reformer Pilates After 50: Rebuilding Mobility Without Risking Injury

Reformer Pilates after 50 builds strength, balance, and mobility without impact. What to expect, when to talk to your doctor, and how to start safely.

Something has shifted. You used to garden all afternoon and feel fine the next morning. You used to sleep through the night without a hip aching. You used to stand up from a low chair without planning the movement first. None of this is catastrophic, but it is real, and the exercise that suited you at forty does not quite fit anymore.

What actually changes in the body after 50

Most people in their fifties and sixties end up choosing between two options that are both wrong. The first is doing nothing, which means losing a little more strength, a little more balance, and a little more mobility every year. The second is pushing through gym classes or fitness formats that were designed for younger bodies, where the load is too high, the pace is too fast, and the instructor cannot see whether your left knee is tracking properly because there are twenty-five other people in the room.

You know your body has changed. You do not need to be alarmed about it. But understanding the specifics helps explain why the right exercise at this stage of life looks different from the right exercise at thirty.

          Muscle mass

declines at roughly one percent per year after forty, and the rate accelerates after sixty. The clinical name for this is sarcopenia, and it is the single most important reason to keep loading your muscles as you age. It is also the reason that light stretching alone, however pleasant, is not doing what your body needs. Muscle responds to load. Without load, it continues to decline.

decreases meaningfully after menopause for women and more gradually for men. Loaded exercise slows the rate of loss, which is one of the clearest arguments for continuing to do strength work rather than avoiding it. If you have been told you have osteoporosis or osteopenia, this does not mean you should stop exercising. It means you should choose exercises that account for it, and your instructor needs to know.

. Connective tissue loses elasticity. Joints that tolerated impact at thirty stop tolerating it at fifty-five. This does not mean you should stop loading them. Unloaded joints deteriorate faster than loaded ones. It means the kind of loading matters more than it used to, and impact is no longer the right kind.

          Balance and proprioception

, your sense of where your body is in space, degrade subtly over decades. This is the underlying reason older adults fall, and it is more trainable than most people realise. The research on fall prevention is clear: strength and balance work together to reduce falls significantly. One without the other does not.

takes longer. A programme that worked when soreness cleared overnight does not work when it takes three or four days. The cadence of exercise matters as much as its content.

Why the reformer is different from a gym, a mat, or a chair

The reformer was not designed for older adults specifically, but its mechanical features happen to solve the problems this age group encounters more precisely than any other piece of equipment available.

Spring resistance is adjustable. This sounds simple, and its implications are not. The reformer can be set lighter than your own bodyweight, which is critically important for someone returning to movement after a knee replacement or managing arthritic joints. It can also be set heavier as your capacity builds, so the progression is genuine rather than capped. No other piece of strength equipment starts below bodyweight and scales up continuously.

The equipment looks more complicated than it is. The reformer has a sliding carriage, a set of springs, straps, and a footbar, and all of it serves a clear purpose that makes sense once someone shows you. The first session is spent learning it, and most people feel comfortable with the mechanics by the end of that hour.

The concern that everyone else in the class will be more advanced is understandable and largely unfounded. With a maximum of five people in a group, the instructor scales the work individually. There is no routine to keep up with. There is no back row to hide in, and there does not need to be.

For most people over 50, a one-on-one private session is the right place to begin. Not because it is more expensive, but because it lets the instructor learn your joint history, your medical considerations, and your movement patterns before group work begins. A private does not assume you know anything. It starts where you are.

When to talk to your doctor first

This section exists because the studio takes your safety seriously, not because the reformer is dangerous. Most people over 50 can begin reformer work without issue. There are specific situations where clinical clearance should come first:

Hip, knee, spine, or shoulder replacement within the last three months. Your surgeon or physiotherapist should confirm you are ready for loaded movement, and the instructor needs to know what was done so the programme is adapted from day one.

          Osteoporosis or significant osteopenia

Reformer work is safe and beneficial with proper modification. Certain forward-flexion exercises are contraindicated and must be replaced. Your instructor needs the diagnosis so he or she can program around it.

A cardiologist should confirm that progressive resistance exercise is appropriate. Once cleared, the work is typically well tolerated.

The studio welcomes referrals from physiotherapists, osteopaths, and family physicians, and works alongside clinicians when a client is returning from injury or managing a condition. If your practitioner has questions about what the work involves, they are welcome to reach out.

The arc is longer than what fitness culture usually describes, and that is the point. You are not training for a race or a reveal. You are building a practice that will still be working for you at sixty-five, seventy-five, and eighty-five.

           Months one to three:

          Awareness

Movement patterns get corrected. Muscles that had been quiet for years wake up. Balance sharpens. Clients in this phase often report sleeping better and standing straighter before they notice anything they would call strength. The changes are real and structural, even when they are not dramatic.

           Months four to six:

          Strength

The work gets progressively harder as your body handles more, and the instructor adjusts the springs and the complexity accordingly. This is when most clients notice they are doing things with meaningfully less effort. Carrying groceries. Climbing stairs. Playing with grandchildren. Getting out of a car without bracing first. The strength is functional before it is visible.

           Months six to twelve:

Twice a week holds gains and continues building slowly. This is the cadence most long-term clients settle into, and it is the cadence the evidence supports. The work by now is familiar enough that you can focus on refinement rather than learning, and the instructor can program more precisely because she knows your body. Most people who reach this point do not stop.

After sequences that ask your spine to work, decompression gives it what it has been asking for since Tuesday. Short spine on the reformer places you on your back with the feet in straps, and lets the spring gently draw the spine into length as the legs move overhead. Spine stretch forward with resistance uses the carriage to guide a controlled forward fold that lengthens the whole posterior chain. These are the sequences most clients want to stay in longer than the class allows. Backs that have been compressed all day recognize the sensation immediately.

The session is for learning, in both directions.

This article is educational and is not a substitute for medical advice. If you are managing a health condition, recovering from surgery, or have concerns about bone density, blood pressure, or balance, please consult your clinician before starting a new exercise program.

The reformer offers a third option. Its resistance is adjustable, which means it can meet a body where it actually is rather than where a class template assumes it should be. Its positions are supported, which means joints that cannot tolerate impact can still be loaded safely. And the work is progressive, which means you build genuine functional strength over months rather than simply maintain what remains.

What follows is an honest account of what changes in the body after 50 that matters for exercise choice, why the reformer's design addresses those changes specifically, what starting actually looks like, and where the real limits are.

Most reformer work happens lying down or in a supported seated position. This reduces spinal compression, limits joint impact, and lowers the balance demands compared to standing gym work. For a body with an arthritic spine or compromised balance, this is the difference between an exercise that helps and one that aggravates.

Christine Clark, one of our senior instructors and trained in Stott Pilates and myofascial assessment, with a background working with rehabilitation clients, often points out that the springs do something no other setup replicates: they pull the carriage back whether you resist actively or not. This means every repetition includes a controlled deceleration phase. Deceleration is the movement quality most protective against falls, and on the reformer it is built into every exercise rather than being trained as a separate skill.

Our group classes cap at five. For a 62-year-old with a fused vertebra or a 58-year-old managing a hip replacement, this is not a luxury. It is a safety requirement. The instructor can see what is happening, adjust the spring, modify the position, and ensure that the work is appropriate for the body in front of them. In a class of twenty, that does not happen.

WHAT THE REFORMER DOES NOT DO

The reformer is not high-impact loading, so it is not a complete solution for bone density on its own. Walking, weight-bearing activity, and sometimes medical treatment matter too. It is not a substitute for a clinician after acute injury. And it is not an entire fitness regimen. Think of it as a foundation that makes everything else work better, not a replacement for all of it.

The sport-specific case for reformer Pilates: rotational power for golf, hip mobility for hockey, hamstring resilience for running.

Your drive is fifteen yards shorter than it was three summers ago, and your swing coach keeps telling you it is a flexibility problem. Or your hips feel locked by the second period, and you are pushing off a stride that used to be longer. Or your hamstrings tighten somewhere around kilometre six, every run, predictably, and the stretching you do afterward has stopped doing anything.

Most amateur golfers have thoracic spines that rotate poorly, and the body solves the problem in one of two ways. It over-rotates the lumbar spine, which produces a decent-looking backswing and a sore lower back by the fourteenth hole. Or it under-rotates the shoulders, which is safer and costs distance. Many golfers do both, alternating depending on how the round is going.

Why athletes miss what the reformer trains

Somewhere along the way, a physiotherapist or a teammate or an advertisement told you to try Pilates. You probably ignored it. Fair enough. Most articles written about Pilates for men spend three paragraphs arguing that it is not just for women before they say anything useful, and by then you have closed the tab.

This article is not going to do that. What follows is a sport-by-sport account of what the reformer actually changes, and why the athletes who try it tend to keep going. One mechanism runs underneath all three sports: the reformer trains the thing most athletes are missing, which is controlled range, rotational stability, and the ability to produce force through a lengthened position. Everything in the gym trains the opposite

Most sport training is concentric. You push, you sprint, you drive, you accelerate. Over years, this builds athletes who are extremely strong in short ranges and progressively weaker everywhere else. The strength is real, but it lives in a narrow band, and the edges of that band keep contracting without anyone noticing.

Spring resistance changes the shape of the work. On the reformer, the carriage returns under tension, which means every repetition has a controlled eccentric phase built into it. You are not just producing force. You are producing force while lengthening, and then decelerating the load on the way back. Weights can be programmed this way with effort and expertise. On the reformer it is unavoidable, because the equipment is designed around it.

That matters for a second reason. Injuries mostly happen during deceleration, not acceleration. The hamstring goes when the leg is slowing down. The groin goes when the stride is being controlled, not when it is being driven. Reformer work is deceleration training in a form that does not look like it, which is why athletes who add it tend to spend fewer weeks on the sidelines.

Then there is rotation. Rotation in sport is supposed to come from the thoracic spine, the middle section of your back, which is built for it. The lumbar spine is not. When the thoracic spine stiffens, and it does stiffen in anyone who sits at a desk between games, the body finds the rotation somewhere else. It borrows it from the lower back. This is a large part of why golfers herniate discs and why hockey players tweak obliques doing something they have done ten thousand times.

The last piece is hip mobility, though mobility is a slightly misleading word for it. Passive flexibility is close to useless in sport. What matters is strength at end range: the ability to produce force in the positions at the outer edge of your movement, which is exactly where skating strides and running gaits live.

Distance off the tee is largely a question of separation: how far your shoulders can turn relative to your hips at the top of the backswing. Coaches call it the X-factor. The wider that gap, the more elastic energy you store, and the more of it you release through the ball.

Here is the part that gets missed. Separation is a thoracic mobility question before it is a strength question. You can add twenty pounds to your squat and gain nothing off the tee if your mid-back will not rotate, because the power has nowhere to come from.

Reformer work addresses this from three directions at once. Rotational sequences, spine twist with the carriage moving and side-lying rotation against the straps, train the thoracic spine to rotate actively rather than being stretched into it. Core work on the reformer is largely anti-rotational, which teaches the lumbar spine to resist rotation while the thoracic spine produces it. That is precisely the pattern a sound golf swing requires, and it is close to impossible to train with a cable machine and good intentions.

The third piece is hip internal rotation, which almost nobody works on. Your lead hip has to internally rotate for you to get through the ball. When it cannot, the finish position collapses and the lower back absorbs what the hip should have handled. If your back is stiff after a round rather than during it, this is usually why, and it connects directly to how the reformer addresses lower-back pain from sitting.

Hip mobility is the skating stride

Skating power comes from hip abduction and external rotation at end range. That is the position at the top of a stride push, the moment the leg is furthest out and about to drive. Everything before it is set up. Everything after it is recovery.

Hockey players build enormous strength in the quads and glutes. What they lose, quietly, over years of the same movement patterns, is the range in which that strength can be applied. By thirty, most rec-league players are pushing off from a range noticeably shorter than the one they had at twenty. The strength is still there. The room to use it is not.

You will not feel this as a mobility problem. You will feel it as effort. The stride takes more out of you than it used to, and you attribute that to age or conditioning. Some of it is. A meaningful part of it is that you are producing the same power over a shorter distance and paying for the difference in energy.

Runners do not tear hamstrings because their hamstrings are weak. Most runners with hamstring problems have perfectly strong hamstrings, which is what makes the injury so frustrating and so repetitive. They tear them because that strength lives in a short range, and the moment of highest strain in the running gait happens at length.

The recommendation for a first-timer is a one-on-one private session, and the reason is practical rather than commercial. The reformer has springs, straps, a moving carriage, a footbar, and a box, and a first group class spent learning where everything is and what it does is a class not spent training. A

This is the reason a steady number of golfers from the West Island's clubs end up in the studio, usually in the weeks before the season opens. We go deeper on the swing mechanics in the golfer's reformer, in more detail.

Feet-in-straps work on the reformer trains hips in almost exactly the patterns skating demands. Leg circles, frog, and adductor sequences move the hip through abduction and external rotation under light spring load, which builds strength at the outer edge of the range rather than just permission to get there.

The adductors deserve their own sentence, because they are the muscle group hockey players injure most. On the reformer they are strengthened through controlled range instead of static holds, which is a different quality of tissue resilience and a considerably more useful one when your groin is being asked to decelerate a stride at speed.

Anti-rotational core work builds the trunk stiffness that lets the hips generate force without the lower back absorbing it. And thoracic mobility shows up here too, in stickhandling posture and in shot power, for the same reason it shows up in golf.

The relevant instant is the end of the swing phase, milliseconds before your foot hits the ground. The leg is extended, decelerating rapidly, and the hamstring is being asked to control that deceleration while lengthened. If it can only produce force in a shortened position, something has to give, and it usually gives at the worst possible moment in a race you spent four months training for.

Less hamstring tightness in the morning after a long run.

Stretching does not address this, because stretching lengthens tissue passively and the problem is force production at length. The reformer trains that specific quality. Long-box work and feet-in-straps hamstring sequences load the hamstring eccentrically through range, which is the closest thing to strain-injury prevention that exists in a movement practice.

Single-leg reformer work does something else worth having. It exposes asymmetry. Nearly every runner has a stronger side and a weaker side, and nearly none of them can feel it, because running is forgiving enough to hide the difference until it becomes an injury. On the reformer, with the carriage responding differently under each leg, the difference becomes obvious in about ninety seconds.

Deep core work stabilises the pelvis and reduces the compensation patterns that produce IT band irritation and hip pain. And hip flexor lengthening matters more for runners than for most athletes, since the psoas shortens a little with every stride. Restoring its length gives you back stride distance you were losing without noticing, rather than forcing a longer stride through the front leg, which is how people get shin splints.

A more even gait, most noticeably over longer distances.

Fewer of the small niggles that quietly build into layoffs.

More on gait mechanics and weekly structure in the runner's reformer, in more detail.

The first two sessions are mostly information. What tends to happen is that you discover how much you did not know about how your own body moves, which is a strange experience for someone who has been athletic their whole life. Most men find the first session harder than they expected and harder in an unfamiliar direction. Not cardiovascular, not maximal load. Control.

By session four, some of it starts to feel automatic. Golfers report that the backswing feels different before they see anything on the course. Hockey players notice they warm up faster. The change is small and specific rather than dramatic, and it is real.

By session six you have enough information to make a decision. Most people continue, though the honest framing is that six sessions gets you the beginning of a change rather than the change itself. The athletes who stop getting injured are the ones who keep going, twice a week through a season or once a week as maintenance. That is the version that works.

Reformer Pilates for Lower Back Pain from Sitting

The specific reformer sequences that address desk-driven lower back pain: hip flexor lengthening, thoracic extension, and posterior chain work. What eight weeks of intentional practice really changes.

You stand up from your desk after a Tuesday of back-to-back meetings, and there it is: the familiar tightness in your lower back, the pinch that has been showing up for weeks now. You’ve been stretching. Furthermore, you’ve tried foam rolling, added deadlifts to your strength training routine, and done yoga on and off. Nothing has undone it because none of it addresses what is actually happening. Your body has adapted to a shape it was not built for, and the shape is holding on.

The reformer trains the same muscles to lengthen

          under load

. That is a technical distinction, and it matters more than it sounds. When your hip flexor lengthens against spring resistance, the nervous system encodes the new range as functional, not incidental. That is what makes the change stick.

Why sitting causes lower back pain (not the reason you've been told)

Eight hours a day, five days a week, month after month, the body concludes that this is the new normal and reorganizes around it. The lower back you feel at 4 pm is not the source of the problem. It is the messenger.=

The good news is that adaptation runs in both directions. Eight weeks of the right corrective practice can undo a surprising amount of what months of sitting have built. What follows is what the right practice actually looks like on a reformer, and why sitting causes lower back pain in the first place, in more mechanical detail than you have likely been given before.

The story you have probably heard is that sitting weakens your back, so you need to strengthen your core. That is not wrong, but it is not the whole picture, and treating a weakness that is really a compensation is why most fixes do not hold.

Here is what is actually happening. When you sit, your hip flexors are held in a shortened position. That group of muscles includes the psoas, which runs from the front of your spine through your pelvis to the top of your thigh. If you keep anything shortened for eight hours a day, the body adapts. The psoas becomes chronically short. Because it attaches to your lumbar spine, a short psoas does not stay quietly in the hip. It pulls.

Christine Clark, one of our senior instructors and trained in Stott Pilates and myofascial assessment, often describes the pelvis as a bowl of water. When the hip flexors shorten, the front of the bowl tips forward. Water spills over the front lip. To keep from falling forward, your lumbar spine arches more sharply to compensate, and the vertebrae start to compress into each other. That compression is what you feel at 4 pm.

Meanwhile, up above, the same sitting posture has been slowly collapsing your thoracic spine, the middle section of your back, the one that is supposed to bend and extend the most. Screens pull the head forward. Shoulders round in. The thoracic spine loses its natural mobility, and now the lumbar spine has to do two jobs at once: hold you upright, and create the extension the thoracic spine used to. It is asked to be more mobile than it should be, at exactly the moment it needs to be stable.

And the posterior chain has switched off from disuse. The glutes, the deep spinal stabilizers, the muscles that should be holding your posture together: none of them are recruited when you sit. Muscles that do not fire lose the neural pathways that let them fire, and over months those pathways go quiet.

Three things at once, then. Hip flexors too short. Thoracic spine too stiff. Posterior chain asleep. The lower back is caught between all three, doing work it was never meant to do. No amount of stretching the sore spot will fix that.

Why the reformer is different from stretching, yoga, or the gym

If you have already tried stretching, yoga, and the gym, and none of it has held, it is worth understanding why the reformer works differently, and why the difference is significant for a back that is already sore.

Stretching lengthens tissue passively. You settle into a position, you breathe, and the muscle releases a little. Muscles that have adapted over months do not hold a passive stretch for long. As soon as you stand back up and return to your desk, the pattern reasserts itself. The stretch felt good; it did not change anything structural.

Then there is the load itself. Spring resistance can be dialled

          lighter

than your own body weight, which matters when your back hurts, and mat-based work asks you to hold your own weight in positions that aggravate the issue. The reformer lets you work in ranges that would otherwise be off limits.

The carriage also creates spinal decompression positions that no other setup replicates. Lying on a sliding surface with the spring taking part of the load, the vertebrae can gently separate rather than compress. Backs that have been under pressure all day tend to respond to this specific sensation with immediate, obvious relief.

And because our group classes cap at five, an instructor can actually see whether your pelvis is tipping, whether your ribs are flaring, whether the movement you are doing is the movement you think you are doing. Corrective work fails when alignment errors go uncorrected. In a class of twenty, they do.

What eight weeks of corrective practice actually looks like

Corrective work is not a workout, and the timeline reflects that. You are not training for strength gains you can measure in a week. You are asking your nervous system to remap a pattern it has practiced for years. That takes time, and it takes repetition at a specific cadence.

Two sessions per week are the honest minimum for adaptation. One a week maintains what you already have. Three sessions per week are faster progress if the schedule allows. Below two, the pattern reasserts itself between sessions faster than you can rebuild it.

You will leave the studio feeling different, though not necessarily better yet. You will feel aware. Where your ribs sit. How your weight moves through your feet. That your shoulders have been living somewhere they should not. This proprioceptive shift is the ground floor. Nothing else works without it.

Hip flexors start to release. Glutes wake up and fire when they should. Thoracic mobility opens, and you feel the difference in how you sit and stand. Most clients report first real relief in this window. Not a dramatic before-and-after, but a stretch of two or three days when the familiar ache does not show up at its familiar time.

The new posture holds between sessions. This is when clients describe sitting through a workday without pain, or standing up from a chair without the reflexive brace. The change is no longer something the studio produces. It is something your body has learned.

If your back pain is acute, radiates down your leg, or involves numbness or weakness anywhere, please see a physiotherapist, osteopath, or physician before starting reformer work. Corrective Pilates is a resilient tool. It is not a substitute for a clinical assessment when one is needed.

The program is intentional rather than exhaustive. Four families of movement, sequenced across your sessions, do most of the heavy lifting in terms of correction. Your instructor will select and progress each based on what your body is showing them at the moment.

The kneeling lunge on the reformer is the corrective version of the lunge stretch you may know from yoga. One knee rests on the carriage, the other foot on the platform. As you press the carriage back, the front of the hip lengthens against the spring. Not because you are forcing a stretch, but because you are asking the psoas to release while it works. Combined with a single-leg stretch that adds spinal stability, this is where the shortened hip finally learns a longer resting length. Repeated across sessions, it holds.

To restore movement to a collapsed thoracic spine, the vertebrae need to move over a supported curve. Supported back extension over the barrel or long box uses the equipment as scaffolding, letting your mid-back extend into a shape it has forgotten. A swan preparation adds arm resistance to teach the shoulder blades to move independently of the neck. When the thoracic spine can extend again, the lumbar spine stops being asked to make up the difference, and much of what you have been feeling releases on its own.

Bridging on the reformer wakes up the glutes and the deep spinal stabilizers in a specific way. The carriage moves as you lift and lower, which forces the muscles to fire eccentrically as well as concentrically. Footwork variations (heels, toes, wide stance, narrow stance) recruit the posterior chain from different angles, teaching muscles that have been quiet how to participate again. Feet-in-straps work adds the hamstrings and the deep hip. These are the muscles your posture has been outsourcing for years. Bringing them back online is what makes the correction sustainable.

The changes you are looking for are not dramatic, and that is the point. Corrective work succeeds when normal function returns, when the body stops sending signals it should not have been sending in the first place. What you notice, if you are paying attention, tends to look like this:

A private lets an instructor read your pattern before you ever step into a class. How your pelvis sits. Where your ribs live. Which side compensates for the other. Whether the pain has a mechanical explanation the movement can address, or whether something else needs to be looked at first.

The first private is an assessment, not a workout. You will move through basic patterns while the instructor watches. You will get an honest read on what your body is doing and a plan for what to work on. There is no pressure to perform, and no requirement to know anything about Pilates going in.

after two or three privates, once the fundamental patterns are established and the group format can build on that foundation rather than have to create it. By that point, the corrective work is doing what it should, and the group setting adds the consistency that makes it hold.
